For students with any previous sailing experience (OSC or comparable programs) seeking more on water time to advance their skills. Students must be able to make appropriate basic sailing decisions independent of instructor directions.
This class will stress those skills and techniques required to single hand an Optimist. Students will increase their on-the-water confidence by expanding their knowledge of helming skills, of sail trim, and of basic right-of-way rules. Sailing skills and techniques will be discussed, clarified and demonstrated on land prior to each sailing session. The majority of time will be spent on the water. Students will be coached and supervised by a Level I Certified Sailing Instructor/NYS Certified teacher in a motorboat. It is anticipated that by the end of this course students will be able to rig, launch and leave the harbor, sail with confidence in a greater range of wind speeds, return to the harbor, dock and unrig their Optimist, all by themselves.
All students must have a life jacket with attached whistle, sneakers, clothes they are comfortable getting wet in, and a change of clothes. Water-resistant sunscreen is recommended.

The Otsego Sailing Club, Inc., is a non-profit organization of sailboat owners who have mutual interests in sailing and sailboat racing. It was founded to encourage recreation and competitive sailing, to promote safety in sailing and all associated activities, and to promote good sportsmanship. The club traces its roots to the summer of 1961 when five families sailed together on Otsego Lake. That fall they organized the Otsego Sailing Club. By-laws were written and race and social programs organized. The support that the club received from Harry Cook was one of the key factors that assured its future. For several years he permitted the club to rent part of his land. He then sold to the club the property it now owns. We have prospered over the years because of the good will and cooperative spirit of our members. Membership includes obligations and responsibilities in order to ensure the continuance of the club.
